Trekking in Ladakh: A Beginner's Guide to the Himalayas

Ladakh: Where Earth Meets Sky

Ladakh sits at the roof of the world — a high-altitude desert landscape of stark beauty, turquoise lakes, and ancient Buddhist monasteries. Trekking here is unlike anywhere else on Earth.

Best Treks for Beginners

1. Markha Valley Trek (4-6 days)

The most popular trek in Ladakh, passing through remote villages, crossing 5,000m passes, and offering views of Kang Yatse peak. Moderate difficulty.

2. Sham Valley Trek (3-4 days)

Known as the "baby trek," this gentle route passes through traditional Ladakhi villages at lower altitudes (3,300-3,800m). Perfect for first-timers.

3. Stok Kangri Base Camp (2-3 days)

A shorter trek with dramatic mountain views. The full Stok Kangri summit (6,153m) requires mountaineering experience.

Acclimatization Is Critical

Ladakh's capital Leh sits at 3,500m. You MUST spend 2-3 days acclimatizing before trekking:

  • Day 1: Rest completely, drink lots of water
  • Day 2: Short walks around Leh (visit Shanti Stupa)
  • Day 3: Day trip to a nearby monastery (no higher than 3,800m)
  • Watch for AMS symptoms: headache, nausea, dizziness

What to Pack

  • Layered clothing (temperatures swing 30°C between day and night)
  • Good trekking boots (broken in beforehand)
  • Sunscreen SPF 50+ and UV-protection sunglasses
  • Water purification tablets
  • Diamox (consult your doctor) for altitude sickness prevention

Best Season

June to September. July-August brings warmer days but also monsoon spillover rain. September offers clear skies and golden light.

Permits

Indian nationals need an Inner Line Permit for areas beyond Leh. Apply online through the Ladakh UT administration portal. Foreign nationals need additional Protected Area Permits.

Budget

Guided treks: ₹3,000-5,000/day inclusive. Self-guided: ₹1,500-2,500/day for food and homestays along popular routes.
